Broken System, Unbroken People explores what happens when communities face barriers to healthcare and what becomes possible when trusted community organizations step forward to fill the gaps. Through lived experiences, community voices, and grassroots leadership, the documentary examines the power of community-centered care and the people working to ensure that residents are seen, heard, connected, and supported.
The documentary features Health Connections, Inc. (HCI) and the Milwaukee Black Grassroots Network for Health Equity (MBGNHE), highlighting their collaborative efforts to respond to Milwaukee’s changing health needs.
Together, HCI and MBGNHE stepped forward to serve the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, responded again following the closure of the City on a Hill clinic, and continue working side by side to connect residents with care, resources, and trusted support. Their work remains especially important as communities navigate continued barriers to care and uncertainty surrounding healthcare access and federal funding.
At its heart, Broken System, Unbroken People is about more than a healthcare system. It is about people, partnerships, resilience, and the power of communities to create solutions when traditional systems fall short.

Community Change Action works to build the power of people and communities to create lasting change.
